Rey “PJ” Abellana has spoken up on the issues surrounding the marital status of his daughter Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez.
The veteran actor was a guest on showbiz columnist Cristy Fermin’s digital talk show Cristy Ferminute on Friday where he promoted his upcoming film Mamasapano.
Cristy, meanwhile, did not miss the chance to ask Rey about Carla and Tom’s alleged split.
“Bilang isa akong magulang, siyempre talagang malaking gulat sa akin ‘yun,” Rey shared his reaction upon learning about the issue.
Rey said that he immediately messaged Carla about the matter but the latter did not give him a response.
“Nung unang nag-message ang anak ko hindi agad nag reply. ‘Dun pa lang sa sitwasyon na hindi agad nakapag-reply si Carla sa akin, eh pumasok na kaagad sa isipan ko na ‘uy may laman itong issue tungkol sa kanila,” stated Rey.

Due to Carla’s silence, the actor said that he had the gut feeling that the couple’s marriage is on the rocks.
After a few days, Rey said Carla replied to tell him that things weren’t well between her and Tom at the time.
“Ganito lang po ang pagkasabi ng anak ko sa akin: ‘Tom and I now are not okay. Anyway Papa, we would like people to give us the respect na i-settle muna namin itong personal na bagay by ourselves,’” Rey recalled his daughter as telling him.
The actress also pleaded to her father not to speak to the press, and just let her and Tom be the ones to settle their personal problem.
Rey admitted that up until now, he still has no idea why Carla and Tom allegedly broke up.
“Nasa tamang edad na ‘yung anak ko. Nag-asawa na nga. Ayaw ko naman pong ipagpilitan ‘yung sarili ko pa sa sitwasyon nila dahil nakikiusap naman siya na hayaan ko na lang daw muna na sila muna ang mag-settle ng problema,” said Rey.
Rey also found it “very unusual and impossible” for Carla and Tom to “break up” when they have been together for seven years and have already settled down.
“Hindi ko pa po sinasabi na hiwalay ‘yung dalawa. Ang point ko dito po, ang sinasabi ko lang po kung ano man ‘yung problema nilang mag-asawa ay sine-settle po nila muna,” he said.
“Dahil hindi naman sila lulugar sa pagpapakasal para lang maghiwalay. Parang napaka-imposible,” he added.
Rey went on to share that Tom had reached out to him and explained his side on the matter.
Cristy later had Rey do a “yes or no” game where she asked the actor if a third party caused Carla and Tom’s supposed breakup.
“Honestly speaking, hindi po natin mako-consider na third party ang sitwasyon, kasi po ang pangyayari eh one night stand eh,” revealed Rey. “So hindi po natin yun kinoconsider na third party.”
Cristy further grilled Rey if Tom did have a one-night stand with another girl.
“Inaamin ko na yan bilang lalaki ako,” said Rey laughingly relating that he used to go through the same experience “way back.”
“Medyo normal sa buhay ng mga lalaki. Kaya naiintidihan ko po ‘yan,” said Rey whose marriage to Carla’s mom Rea Reyes was annulled.
“Ang nangyari sa tukso ay hindi po mortal sin para sa akin. Bilang isang totoong tao, ang nangyayari sa mga ganyang bagay, natural sa buhay ‘yan,” he added.
Rey also debunked speculations that Tom is gay.
“I don’t think so. Hindi ko po nakikita yan at hindi ko pinapaniwalaan yan para kay Tom. Kilala ko ang anak ko (Carla). In all those years, seven years, hindi ba makikita ng anak ko ’yun?”.
“As much as possible inuunawa ko at pinagdadasal ko ‘yung dalawa na talagang maayos nila, the soonest, ang kanilang sitwasyon,” added the actor.
