The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has summoned the producers of “It’s Showtime” to appear before the agency after receiving multiple complaints over the noontime show’s July 24 episode.
In a statement, the MTRCB said viewers raised concerns over Vice Ganda’s alleged “racist” and “colorist” remarks during the show’s “Memerimar” skit, as well as a separate “lugaw” scene featuring the comedian and partner Ion Perez.
The summons comes just days after Vice Ganda publicly apologized on air following backlash over the controversial segment. During the July 25 live episode, the comedian acknowledged viewers’ criticisms, saying the production had heard their concerns and stressing that the show’s goal has always been to entertain, not offend.
Vice also apologized to those who were hurt by the jokes and assured viewers that the team would strive to do better moving forward.
The controversy stemmed from the July 24 episode, where the “Memerimar” skit drew criticism after Baby Dolls member Johaira Moris was sprayed with water, followed by a joke implying her skin had turned “muddy.” The scene sparked online backlash, with many netizens accusing the segment of promoting colorism and racism.
