Billy Porter makes LGBT history with Emmy win

-

Pose star Billy Porter wins his first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Porter makes history as the first openly gay black man to win in the category.

In the drama series, he plays the emcee Pray Tell, who struggles with an HIV diagnosis.

In his powerful acceptance speech, Porter quotes James Baldwin: “It took many years of vomiting up the filth I was taught about myself and halfway believed before I could walk around this Earth like I had a right to be here.”

“I have the right. You have the right. We all have the right,” he added.

Critics say his Emmy win is a culmination of his years of success in Broadway. He is only an “O” away from an EGOT, short for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

Porter won a Tony in 2013 and a Grammy in 2014, both for his lead role in the musical Kinky Boots.
