Volunteer rescuer dies from electrocution in flood-hit Cagayan

-

A rescue volunteer lost his life after getting in contact with a live wire while on a rescue operation in the heavily-flooded Barangay Linao in Tuguegarao, Cagayan.

Netizen Ian Saquing Maggay in a Facebook post paid tribute to Kelly Villarao for his bravery and heroism after risking his life to save others from the floodwaters brought by Typhoon Ulysses.

“If it happens that this post appeared in your timeline, may I ask from you a moment of silence to commemorate the death of our Brave brother who lost his life by saving the lives of some Tuguegaraoeños during the flood and typhoon rescue operation at Brgy. Linao, Tuguegarao City last night,” wrote Maggay.

“May you rest in peace our dear Brother Kelly Villarao — a frontliner, life saver, a volunteer rescuer and a true hero of this generation. Your heroic story will be kept forever in the hearts of every Cagayanoes.”

Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba said that as of Saturday nine nine people have died amid the massive flooding in the province. Villarao was among the three people who died from electrocution. Four more died due to landslide, while two others died of drowning.

Villarao is survived by his wife and his five-month-old son.

“What is more heartbreaking is naiwan niya ang kanyang asawa and his 5 month old son that now both will continue to face the challenges of life without him,” added Maggay in the now-viral Facebook post.
