Courtside reporter Apple David is asking for the public’s respect as she acknowledged criticism surrounding her relationship with collegiate athlete Chad Gammad.
In an exclusive video statement released by “Frontline Pilipinas,” David has confirmed that she and Gammad have been seeing each other for a month.
She also apologized to those offended by the situation but emphasized that she and Chad only want support and understanding during what she described as a “happy time” of their lives.
“Sa mga na-offend, we’re sorry but we just ask for respect as this should be a happy time for us,” David said.
The longtime reporter acknowledged that their relationship comes with challenges, particularly because of their age gap, but maintained that it is a decision both of them willingly made.
“I know it’s a very risky relationship because of the age gap, but it’s a risk we are both taking, and I hope people can be kind enough to allow us to do that in peace,” she added.
David also thanked those who have shown support and sent encouraging messages amid the controversy.
The issue first gained traction online after rumors circulated linking the 33-year-old courtside reporter to the 18-year-old basketball player, prompting mixed reactions from netizens over their reported 15-year age difference.
David initially responded to the backlash during a TikTok Live, where she addressed comments questioning why she did not date someone closer to her age.
“’Di ko talaga nagegets ’no? Sa buhay ba natin, lagi tayong nakakapili? Paano ’yung mga bagay na biglang dumating na lang na sitwasyon tapos sometimes, you just can’t explain it. Like, I cannot explain it,” she said at the time.
When another netizen commented that she had a choice not to date an 18-year-old, David defended her decision.
“But I also have a choice to. Masama bang bigyan ng chance ’yung… nag-click eh! What am I supposed to do?” she answered.
David also stressed that both she and Gammad are legally adults and capable of making their own decisions.
“Naiintindihan ko na bata siya but he’s not a minor. I’m not even a groomer, 18 na siya nung nakilala ko siya. Hindi ko naman siya pinalaki,” she said.
The reporter further pushed back against accusations labeling her a “groomer,” “predator,” or “pedophile.”
“Don’t use words if you don’t know the meaning. Groomer? Predator? Pedophile? Do you guys even know the meaning?” David said.
Despite the criticism online, David shared that the people closest to them, including their families, have remained supportive of their relationship.
“Sobrang hirap bang rumespeto ng desisyon ng ibang tao? We’re happy. Supportive ang families namin. Ang pangit lang na we’re happy tas sinisira niyo ang happiness namin,” she said.
As of writing, Gammad has yet to issue a public statement regarding the controversy.
