Netizens react to Jarren Garcia’s reporting of Gloria Romero’s wake

Former Pinoy Big Brother Gen 11 housemate Jarren Garcia received criticisms online over the way he reported about late veteran actress Gloria Romero’s wake during a live national TV newscast.

The controversy arose from a viral clip of Jarren delivering his segment on the Kapamilya news program TV Patrol where he reported on the celebrities attending the wake of the screen legend, who passed away on January 25 at the age of 91.

X user povniganda expressed their dismay over the young singer, writing in a post, “The disrespect to Miss Gloria Romero, sana sa susunod kapag mala-kinder bumasa ang starlet huwag na ipapilit, kasi nakakabastos sa pagkamatay ng isang well respected icon in the industry.”

The post has since garnered over 18,000 likes and more than 500 replies from users sharing mixed reactions to the video.

Likewise to the clip’s uploader, another X user expressed his criticism on the platform, writing, “This is disrespectful to both the deceased artist AND the craft of newscasting. So many people train for YEARS to get this career and they just hand it over to random celebs just because they’re famous? be so [for real]. Even showbiz news needs to be told properly.

One netizen questioned the decision to assign Garcia the sensitive topic, commenting, “Ba’t ‘yung balita [about] kay Ms. Gloria pa pinabasa sa kanya 🤦”

Another criticized his delivery, saying, “Not bashing, I’m curious who is he and why did he do this? Pretty face [nalang] ba ang criteria ngayon? He cannot read straight in Tagalog, and [obviously] he’s reading from a script or teleprompter pa. He could have practiced in front of people first for feedback or evaluation.”

One more user also weighed in on Jarren’s Tagalog proficiency: “We know he can’t speak well in Tagalog but what’s the excuse in pronouncing the names of this actresses/[people], he practiced it and [people] behind able to correct him, why he deliver that way in such sensitive news. Let’s just talk about professionalism of him and as a reporter.”

Despite the criticism, some fans and netizens defended the young celebrity, arguing that the responsibility should fall on the producers and not Jarren who was just tasked to do it.

“I love Jarren but I get this post and it makes sense [because] it is a sad and special news for the late Ms Gloria. BUT, it’s not Jarren’s fault na ibinigay sa kanya yang spill na ‘yan. He’s just doing his job. Blame those who are in charge at bakit sa kanya ibinigay yung spill na ‘yan,” a fan reasoned.

“He is talented but no to speaking in Tagalog….. he has a lot to develop pa… ‘wag din pilitin ang biglaan pagsikat ng bata…. Give him some time for this task 🙂.” added another.

A different user urged critics to be more understanding: “Although I have to agree w/ you that the news given to Jarren is sensitive and should have been relayed cautiously, I’d like to point out that it is not his fault that he was put on the spot to do the spiel. Sana, bago ka nagbitiw ng masasakit na salita sa bata, inisip mo muna.”

“Ang dapat punahin jan ay kung sino ang nagdesisyon na ilagay s’ya sa portion na ‘yan. Hindi na nga nabigyan ng maayos na delivery ‘yung sensitive topic, napahiya pa on air ‘yung artist,” commented another netizen.

On the other hand, Jarren, his management, nor TV Patrol, have yet to comment on the criticisms, as of writing.
