Sharon Cuneta has no plans to enter politics, saying she would rather “run away” from a political career than give up the life she has built in showbiz.
Cuneta made the remarks during an exclusive interview with TV host Boy Abunda, who asked the veteran singer and actress if she would ever consider running for public office.
“I would consider running away from politics. Tatakbo ako palayo,” Cuneta told Abunda.
The Megastar said she loves her life and the opportunities her career gives her to entertain and connect with people through concerts, television, and films.
“I love my life. I love that I’m able to make people happy, thousands at a time in concerts, TV shows, movies. It’s a gift. I take care of it,” Sharon reflected on her career in showbiz.
Cuneta also shared how much she values working with fellow artists and filmmakers, describing the bonds she forms on set as something she would not trade for a career in politics.
“I love the work that I have. I love singing. I love working with actors new and people I worked with before, new directors. I become family on the set with everybody I am working with. It’s special to me so I wouldn’t trade it for a life in politics, no, it’s a horror story,” she explained.
According to Cuneta, she has been asked about entering politics since she was around 20 years old, but she has consistently turned down the idea.
“Ako ‘yung outsider. Outlier,” she said, adding that her husband, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, is “more well-equipped” for a political career.
Cuneta also explained that the responsibilities and consequences involved in public office are among the reasons she does not see herself pursuing politics.
“Sa showbiz it is so understandable na iba-iba ang taste ng tao. ‘Yung iba Sharonian, ‘yung iba hindi. Okay lang,” she acknowledged the public’s perception towards her as a celebrity.
Sharon noted that mistakes in showbiz do not carry the same consequences as those made by public officials, whose decisions can affect thousands or even millions of people.
“‘Pag meron kaming pagkakamali, hindi naapektuhan ‘yung buong bayan. Kapag ang politiko nagkamali, may maapektuhan usually daang libo, milyon and that’s a very big responsibility,” she stressed.
“And I may have the smarts. I may have the heart for it. Ang lagi kong sinasabi, I will never have the stomach for it.”
Sharon is set to star in her first project with Kapuso actress Barbie Forteza in the upcoming Prime Video series “Honor Thy Mother,” which premieres September 11.
The two will portray an estranged mother and daughter whose long-awaited reunion takes an unexpected turn, eventually making them “fierce rivals.”
