Miss Universe Canada Nova Stevens took to social media to call out pageant fans for their racist remarks against her on social media.
The pageant queen shared how even with the “Black Lives Matter” and “Asian Are Human” movements, some are still “stuck in their ignorant and racist ideologies.”
On her Instagram post, she shared a photo compiling the comments of many Filipinos regarding her skin color.
“Your hate takes away the fun and enjoyment from this once in a lifetime experience. Is it really difficult to spread love instead of hate? No one is saying you HAVE to support all contestants, all we’re saying is that you support your delegate without bringing others down,” she wrote.
The 26-year-old added that beauty comes in different shapes, shades and sizes. “We don’t need to look the same, we just need to treat each other the same,” she said.
Canada’s Miss Universe bet clarified that her post was not meant to generalize Filipinos.
“Cheer for your girls with love and respect for the other delegates because they too are deserving of the ‘Miss Universe’ crown. Spread love not hate,’ she ended.
To close the matter on a positive note, Nova shared the positive comments she has received from Filipino pageant fans.
“The last thing I want is for anyone to experience hate so please don’t bash or generalize the Filipino fans; not all are racist,” she wrote.
Nova will be competing for the crown alongside the Philippines’ bet Rabiya Mateo and other contestants.
The 69th Miss Universe pageant will be airing on TV via the A2Z channel on May 17.
