Carlos Yulo open to reconcile with family, explains why financially supporting siblings ‘not his responsibility’

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo spoke candidly about his relationship with his family in a recent interview.

Appearing on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on Monday, March 23, Carlos was joined by his longtime girlfriend Chloe San Jose as he opened up about the current state of his relationship with his family following their highly publicized falling out.

The gymnast, who made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, faced controversy after his victories due to issues involving alleged financial mismanagement and disapproval of his personal relationships.

Yulo, for his part, said he has done what he could to mend relationships, even turning to faith for guidance.

“Ginawa ko po yung part ko, and naglakas ako ng loob,” he told Abunda, admitting that he has already forgiven his family and holds no resentment over past issues.

“Ako, wala akong galit sa puso ko. Wala kahit anong galit, sama ng loob, pagtatampo. Wala akong naramdaman na ganoon kahit yung times na nilagay nila ako sa ganoong sitwasyon, na hindi naman totoo at hindi naman namin ginawa,” he said.

Carlos noted that while he has made efforts to reconcile, the outcome is ultimately beyond his control, “Kung tatanungin ako ni Lord, ‘Gusto mo ba sila makasama?’ wala naman pong problema. Ako triny ko ‘yung best ko na kausapin sila. Mapag-ayos ang lahat, pero hindi ko po hawak ‘yung sagot na ‘yon.”

Chloe, for her part, shared that she had been encouraging Carlos to at least rebuild ties with his siblings even during the height of the controversy.

“Not to magbuhat ng bangko, pero it’s always been me na nag-e-encourage, even if he really didn’t want to at the time na it was super crazy and talagang maingay and stuff,” she said.

“I have always been the one to encourage him na, ‘Mahal, if you don’t want to ano the other parts of your family, at least, your siblings,’” added Chloe.

Speaking of his siblings, Carlos drew a clear boundary when it comes to his role as an older brother to Eldrew and Eliza, who are also gymnasts like him, particularly in terms of financial support.

“Especially sa mga competition, hindi po talaga, e. Kasi part po kami ng national team and hindi ko po responsibility to do that,” Yulo explained.

He emphasized that each of them must carve their own path, saying he wants them to have their own journeys rather than rely on his experiences or resources.

“Gusto ko may iba’t iba po kaming journey… hindi porke’t na-experience ko yung mga bagay na ganoon, e, mae-experience din nila,” he added.

Back in January, Carlos and Chloe reunited with the former’s siblings in celebrating Eldrew’s birthday at a theme park in Laguna.

Eldrew recently won his first senior international gold medal in men’s floor exercise at the 2026 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Antalya, Turkey. He is now bound to Egypt and Croatia to continue two more legs in Cairo and Osijek in the coming months.
