On Thursday, Liza Soberano filed a formal criminal case against the netizen who allegedly made a rape remark about her on social media.
According to ABS-CBN’s entertainment reporter MJ Felipe, the actress condemned the rape joke.
“I was really upset because the fact that it’s a rape joke it’s not something that should be taken lightly, and the fact that she’s a woman, I would never in a million years do a joke like that,” Soberano said.
The 22-year-old told Felipe that while everyone is entitled to their own opinions, at some point, they still have to respect other people online.
The official statement of Soberano’s legal counsel, Atty. Jun Lim, said their client is merely asserting her right to be treated with respect.
“She stood up not just for herself but also on behalf of those silent victims of ‘rape jokes’ and malicious statements perpetrated by few irresponsible members of the social media community.
“Ms. Soberano reminds us once again that women must be treated with respect and dignity regardless of their status in life,” he said.
On September 20, a fan posted a screenshot of a “rape joke” by a supposed employee of telecommunications company, Converge.
Another fan asked Soberano not to let the incident pass. “Don’t worry we won’t let this one pass. They know my address,” she said.
