Street dwellers in Manila were rescued and given shelter by the local government amid the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine to combat the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Homeless Manileños are currently taking refuge in individual modular tents set up at the Delpan Sports Complex.
Upon the directive of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna, the city’s Department of Social Welfare scoured the streets of Ermita, Malate, Kalaw, Pedro Gil, Taft, Roxas Blvd., Service Road at Baywalk to rescue street dwellers, families, youth and the elderlies.
As of Saturday, March 21, the Delpan covered court houses 145 evacuees.
“…22 rito ay Manileno, 72 ang tiga ibang lungsod at 51 na walang permanenteng tirahan”, stated the Manila Public Information in a tweet.
Aside from the modular tents, evacuees are also provided enough food and medical supplies.
“Regular na rasyon din ng pagkain ang natatanggap ng bawat evacuee sa agahan, tanghalian at hapunan. Mayroon ding kani-kaniyang hygiene kit at face masks,” the Manila PIO added.
MDSW director Re Fugoso stressed the importance of offering assistance in this time of crisis.
“Kapag panahon ng kalamidad hindi tayo pwedeng pumili ng tao. Kahit hindi tiga-Maynila, tumutulong tayo. Sa totoo lang, mas marami ang hindi tiga-Maynila pero hindi natin sila p’wedeng pabayaan,” said Dir. Fuguso.
