Senate website defaced by hacktivist group in apparent protest

The official website of the Philippine Senate was temporarily defaced after a self-proclaimed hacktivist group claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, describing it as a form of protest.

On Wednesday, June 10, a group identifying itself as Nullsec Philippines admitted to defacing the Senate’s website, particularly its “News Release” section, where several unauthorized and unusual posts briefly appeared.

According to reports, the posts contained messages bearing the names “Angelica” and “Ashley,” including one that read, “Your system has been tralalelo tralala.” Other messages included, “Angelica X Ashley, please patch your system ;pp” and “Your System Has Been Tralalelo Tralala <3.”

The posts did not resemble legitimate Senate news releases and contained no official government-related information, prompting concerns about the security of the institution’s online platforms.

Following the incident, Nullsec Philippines posted a cryptic statement on its Facebook page, suggesting that the defacement was intended as a message to public officials.

The statement went on to call for greater transparency and accountability in government, criticizing corruption and the misuse of public trust.

“We are watching,” the group began.

“The Filipino people entrusted you with power, responsibility, and the duty to serve the nation—not personal interests, political dynasties, or corrupt networks,” part of the statement read.

The group also warned that citizens, particularly the “digital generation”, are increasingly vigilant in monitoring government actions.

“Information cannot be buried forever, and public trust cannot survive without honesty,” the post added. “To those who serve with integrity, continue your work. To those who abuse the public’s trust, know that citizens are paying attention. The people deserve truth. The people deserve accountability. The people deserve better.”

The message concluded with the line: “We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect Us.”

A day after the incident, the Senate issued an official statement acknowledging the website defacement and assuring the public that no confidential or sensitive information appears to have been compromised.

According to the Senate, its technical team immediately contained the incident, launched an investigation into the breach, and implemented additional security measures to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Authorities have yet to announce whether any individuals connected to the incident have been identified as investigations continue.
