This doctor is impressing netizens not just inside the hospital but also with her creations using a 3D printer.
Dra. Shiela Marie Afalla recalled how she started learning about this craft way back in 2018.
“Nag-start po akong mag-3D print around 2018. Sabi ko, itry ko nga itong—ay nakita ko ‘yung 3D printer, tapos na-amaze ako, ang dami niyang nagagawa.Habang nagwo-work po ako, doon po din ako gumagawa ng mga 3D printed products ko. Magwo-work ako 8 AM to 5 PM Tapos pag-uwi ko, mag-3D print ako,” she told The Philippine STAR.
Adding, “Ang 3D printing kasi hobby kasi siya and at the same time, negosyo. So, pang-destress talaga siya. Marami kasi po pwede talagang i-print. Mag-iisip ka lang ng ipi-print tapos magagawa mo na siya. So, mapa-laruan, mapa-gamit sa bahay, or mga tools po, ‘no?”
In the middle of the pandemic, her then hobby was helpful to her fellow health workers.
“Nung pandemic po, ang una pong gumawa ng mga face shield sa Pilipinas at saka mga ear savers ay mga nagtri-3D print po. Isa po ako sa gumawa nung time na ‘yun. Marami pong nag-donate sa amin para makabili po ng printers and materials. Kapalit po nun, gumawa po kami ng maraming face shields and ear savers para po ibigay sa mga hospitals and other healthcare workers,” she narrated.
“Malaking bagay po ‘yun noon, lalo na kasi ‘pag nagma-mask kasi po during pandemic, matagal kasi po talagang sinusuot ‘yung mask, hindi mo siya kailangan ibaba. So, ang sakit na ng mask sa likod ng tenga, tapos additional protection po ‘yung face shields,” she added.
She also ventured to print medical-related items.
“Since doctor po ako, initially nung pandemic, ang prini-print ko po talaga ay mga accessories po for respirators. Then, lumipat po ako sa mga accessories sa stethoscope. ‘Yung mgascan na mga buto, tapos trini-3D print for pre-operative planning, lumipat po ako sa ibang mga products din na non-medical like keychains. ‘Yung recently nga po na product na pumatok po is ‘yung coin organizer,” she said.
When asked if she was an artistic and industrious kid growing up, Dra. Sheila opened up on her childhood in Nueva Vizcaya.
“Nanonood lang kami ng TV for entertainment purposes. Tapos kapag maglalaro kami, syempre kulang ‘yung mga stores na bibilhan ng mga laruan. Kami ‘yung gumagawa nung mga laruan namin nung bata kami. Pareho kami ng mga kapatid ko, tatlo kaming babae, at ako ‘yung panggitna,” she noted.
It was also the time she discovered her talent for creating something that she needs, whether toys or anything that she needs at home.
“Halimbawa, meron kaming mga sirang laruan tapos gusto ko siyang ayusin, naaral ko siya or nagawa ko siya nang walang nagtuturo sa akin. Simula noon, parang na-amaze na ako na kaya ko pa lang gumawa ng mga ganitong bagay, like, maliit na electric fan, kaya ko magpailaw ng bumbilya, gamit lang ang battery at konting wires gamit sa mga sira naming appliances,” said Dra. Shiela.
“Mahilig akong magbutingting. So, kaya madali akong natuto about gadgets, about computers, about 3D printing, kasi bata pa lang talaga gusto ko na parang gusto kong maging inventor, gusto kong maging scientist,” she added.
But before becoming a doctor, she once dreamt of being a policewoman. She took Mechanical Engineering as her first course in college and even tried entering Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA).
She then shifted to BS Pharmacy that became her pre-med course. Dra. Sheila graduated from Pamantansan ng Lungsod ng Maynila medical school in 2016.
Her hobby/business eventually became a family business. Her parents are now helping her to run it.
“Lahat ng bagay, natututunan. So kung gusto mo talaga siyang gawin, kahit wala kang alam, kahit studyante ka, nanay ka, ate ka, lola, kung gusto mo talaga siyang gawin, ay pwede mong gawin, aaralin mo lang talaga po,” she said when asked about her message to the public.
“Lahat naman nga naaaral. So walang problema. Kaya mo ‘yan. Sure ako, kaya mo ‘yan ‘pag gusto mo talagang aralin. Gusto ko po siyang i-share sa mga kapwa ko Pilipino, kaya po ako nag-decide na gumawa na po ng content last year,” she added.
