Is Mika Salamanca PBB’s ‘first LGBTQIA+’ Big Winner?

-

A video of Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition Big Winner Mika Salamanca revealing herself as a bisexual has resurfaced online.

Mika, who won the reality competition alongside her duo partner Brent Manalo on Saturday, July 5, has sparked a wave of celebration on social media, with netizens expressing their admiration and support for the pair.

Recently, the social media star is receiving renewed attention online as netizens are naming her as the “first” openly LGBTQIA+ Big Winner in the history of PBB.

The recognition stemmed on X where clips of a past episode of the show where Mika candidly came out during a light-hearted conversation with fellow housemates circulated on the platform.

As shown in the videos, Mika can be heard sharing her attraction toward the same sex, saying, “Jojowain ko babae.”

Fellow housemate and third Big Winner Charlie Fleming then asked, “Are you bi[sexual]?” to which Mika responded, “I am.”

This is Mika’s first time openly admitting she is queer, as she had not previously addressed her sexuality before her statement in the said episode.

This prompted many netizens to describe Mika’s win a milestone for the LGBTQIA+ community on mainstream reality TV, especially within a show as widely followed as Pinoy Big Brother in the country.

It is worth noting that this season of PBB stood out not only for the groundbreaking collaboration between media giants ABS-CBN and GMA Network, but also for the increased queer representation inside the house, with housemates Esnyr, who openly identified as gay, and Klarisse de Guzman, who revealed her sexuality and her long-term same-sex relationship for the first time on national television.
