Actress-singer Janella Salvador admitted to having a crush on a girl in the past, which ultimately inspired her latest song, “Hey You.” The song features a love story between two women in its music video.

In an episode of local radio station Yes FM Manila uploaded on YouTube last Wednesday, July 3, radio host Lyka Barista was joined by Janella where they discussed the latter’s latest song.

The song was released in time for Pride month and featured a girls’ love (GL) story portrayed by Salvador and her former “Darna” co-star, Jane de Leon.

During the interview, Barista asked about the inspiration behind the song which Janella had previously revealed was based on her concepts.

The actress initially expressed her gratitude to the Kapamilya record label Star Music and the people who helped her put her ideas into reality, especially the creative and production team, who were also formed mostly by her close friends.

“Hindi ko ‘to magagawa if not for the people who supported me dito sa music video,” thanked Janella.

She also addressed her fans, whom she referred to as “Vadengs”, for streaming the music video which led to its placement on YouTube Philippines’ trending videos.

The host went on to ask Janella if she had ever experienced a similar moment from the music video, particularly if she had ever liked someone from the same gender.

“Nagkaroon ka na ba ng moment na ganyan? Nagka-crush ka sa kapwa mo babae?,” Lyka asked Janella.

To this, the singer sassily answered, “Of course,” with no hesitations, adding that the music video wouldn’t be made if it wasn’t for the said fact.

“Hindi mabubuhay ‘yung music video. Since it was my concept, I wanted it to be as personal as possible. Eh galing akong all-girls school, so ‘yun na din nilagay ko sa music video,” Janella shared.

The actress also addressed those who are not accepting of same-sex relationships in the present.

“I think in this day and age, what are you even doing?,” Janella questioned, before adding, “Why? Like…Love is love. Love is for everybody and you can love whoever you want to love.”

“You can be attracted to whoever you want to be attracted to. There’s nothing wrong with that,” she added.

Salvador also voiced her support for the passing of the SOGIE Equality Bill which seeks to prohibit discrimination based on a person’s expression of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Before concluding the interview, Janella presented her fans with a treat to her fans once Hey You’s music video hits the 500,000 view mark, a behind-the-scene video will be released in celebration of the feat.

The music video currently has over 350,000 views on the platforms.
