Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile has broken his silence on the viral memes about him.
In a Facebook post, the 96-year-old former politician thanked the internet people for making his “immortality” a subject of their creative memes.
“Thank you for all the memes you posted about me. I am truly flattered and grateful for all your imaginative and creative thoughts regarding me,” he wrote.
“For one like me who is passing through this life and has reached the point of no return, I am very very much touched emotionally. I wish you all the best,” he added.
He went on to wish everyone “good luck” in the crisis that the world is currently facing — the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“May God protect you all from the present peril, and may you also reach the same ripe age like mine and run through the same experiences that I went through on this planet. God bless you all and your families. Good luck!”
A bunch of edited funny statements and memes poking fun at Enrile’s age emerged online in light of the COVID-19 crisis.
The former senator earlier addressed rumormongers that he is still alive and does not have COVID-19 after netizens asked about his whereabouts.
In another Facebook post, Enrile gave his unsolicited advice to the public, which is to “not take the current situation lightly or as joke”.
“Follow the rules laid out by our public officials. Let us help them in performing their jobs and in solving the problem we are facing. Let us not cause additional problem for them. We are in a war condition. Let us help one another. Let us help our public officials,” he said.
He added: “Let us not take the current situation lightly or as joke. It is very, very serious. Let us do away with our frivolities. Let us sacrifice for the sake of our loved ones, our relatives, our friends, our countrymen and our nation. STAY HOME TO AVOID INFECTION AND INFECTING OTHERS.”
“With our collective efforts and with God’s help, we will survive,” he ended.
