Ronnie Liang’s Project Ngiti continues with free cleft surgeries for 10 kids

Ronnie Liang has continued his cleft lip advocacy, providing free surgeries for 10 more children.

The singer and reservist recently worked with partner groups to arrange free cleft lip and palate surgeries for 10 children under his nonprofit initiative, Project Ngiti, which also marked his birthday.

The activity was held at St. Vincent General Hospital in Marikina in partnership with Smile Train Philippines and volunteer surgeons Drs. Jenny Mercado, Edmund Mercado and Niel Reyes, where he also met with the children and their families.

Ronnie said his involvement in community work has been a personal commitment over the years.

“Making my birthday special through charitable endeavors has become a tradition. This began when I came to understand that being an artist involves more than just showcasing talent — it also involves touching people’s lives. Every year, I look forward to celebrating my birthday with communities that I believe need my support,” he said.

He added that more children were included in the latest batch of beneficiaries.

“We decided to add more kids this year because we thought Project Ngiti should continue to provide free operations for kids with cleft lip and palate. When I went to see them at St. Vincent and witnessed their sincere smiles with their parents, I was very moved. In case anyone missed it, my hit song ‘Ngiti’ served as the inspiration for Project Ngiti,” Ronnie said.

Reflecting on his advocacy, Ronnie said his priorities have shifted over time. “When you reach a certain age, you stop worrying about what material things you should buy for your birthday. For me, it’s about intention and purpose. When you’re blessed, it’s good to help people in need,” he said.

Since it was established, Project Ngiti has helped around 400 children undergo free cleft lip and palate surgeries. Ronnie said they continue to receive requests from families seeking assistance. “According to our skilled surgeons, children with cleft lip and palate can lead normal lives. Their parents have sent us letters and online messages requesting free surgery, and we are already making arrangements to fulfill their request. It would be great if more doctors would support our cause,” he said.

Ronnie also shared that he hopes to continue the program and is considering holding a benefit concert in the future. His last major concert was in 2019, with Sarah Geronimo as a special guest.
