Michael Cinco reacts to student who went viral for making sister’s JS prom gown

The college student who went viral for making a stunning JS prom gown for his younger sister impressed no less than the Filipino fashion designer whose work was his inspiration.

Maverick Oyao, a student from Western Mindanao State University, shared that because his family couldn’t afford to buy or rent a gown, he had to learn how to create one by watching YouTube videos featuring the couture pieces of Michael Cinco.

The Dubai-based designer reacted to the story via a Facebook post: “This is a very inspiring story…LOVE inspires people to create beautiful things in the world…”

It was out of brotherly love that the Culture and Arts Education student came up with a DIY gown.

“The main reason behind all of this is kapos sa budget and wala po kaming ma-rentahan na maayos na gown na sakto sa P3,000 lang po kaya ayun I planned to create something nalang,” he told The STAR.

Maverick said he got his inspiration from Michael Cinco’s Spring and Summer Collection after browsing the internet for different types of ball dresses.

He admitted that at first, he had doubts as he didn’t know how and where to begin. Eventually, he grew excited to see its outcome.

“Day by day habang sinisimulan ko siyang gawin na-e-excite ako makita outcome niya and I did not even imagine the amazing outcome,” he said.

“I applied the elements of art lang po sa ginagawa ko and thinking that all the sacrifices and sleepless (nights) are nothing compared to my love for our bunso,” he added.

Handmade details of the satin royal blue gown were all stitched together with the help of his mother using their manual sewing machine.

For Maverick, the time and effort he put in were all worth it after seeing the priceless reaction of her younger sister.

“Seeing her genuine smile while walking into the entrance of the prom is so priceless for me as her kuya,” he said.

Maverick said the gown cost him P3,000 and was completed in more than one week.
