ABS-CBN and Star Magic threw their full support behind actress Liza Soberano as she sought legal action against a telecom employee who allegedly made a rape remark about her online.
In a statement on Thursday, the network and its talent management arm said that they are backing the criminal complaint that Liza filed with the Office of the City Prosecutor in Quezon City “for libel, threats, and unjust vexation against the person who posted disparaging remarks about her character and, worse, threatened to have her raped.”
They also said that reckless and malicious use of social media should never be tolerated.
“Moreover, rape is not a joke. We applaud Liza’s courage to protect her dignity as a woman. Let this be a lesson to everyone to be responsible in using social media and to be respectful of others,” they said of Liza, one of the network’s prized stars.
Meanwhile, in the official statement of Liza’s legal counsel Jun Lim of Lim & Yutatco-Sze Law Firm, they said that the filing of the criminal complaint is to assert the actress’ right to be treated with respect.
“She stood up not just for herself but also on behalf of those silent victims of ‘rape jokes’ and malicious statements perpetrated by few irresponsible members of the social media community.
“Ms. Soberano reminds us once again that women must be treated with respect and dignity regardless of their status in life.”
