Fanfiction readers received quite a scare on Halloween as Archive of Our Own (AO3), one of the internet’s most popular fanfiction platforms, announced that its website could remain inaccessible for weeks following a “security incident.”
The outage sent readers worldwide into a frenzy after attempts to visit the website led them to a crash page instead of their usual library of fan-made stories. For many, the unexpected downtime meant putting their reading lists, favorite fanfictions, and ongoing stories on hold.
The Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), the nonprofit organization behind AO3, announced on its social media accounts that it had detected evidence of a “security incident” on the platform, prompting an investigation and maintenance work.
While OTW assured users that their uploaded works and reading progress had not been deleted, it could not yet confirm whether personal information had been compromised. This includes users’ usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, and hashed passwords, as the organization has yet to rule out the possibility that the site’s user database was stolen.
As a precaution, OTW advised users to change their passwords on other websites and platforms where they may have reused the same credentials as their AO3 accounts.
“AO3 does not collect real names, so none could be exposed. Additionally, our donor information is held in an entirely separate system and is never linked to AO3, so that data has also not been exposed,” OTW said.
What initially appeared to be a temporary outage lasting only a few hours has since turned into a much longer wait, with the organization estimating that full service restoration could take up to a month.
“We estimate that service restoration for AO3 will take around 2 weeks but it could be up to 4 weeks. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the site back up in a degraded state sooner. If that does happen, there may be times when the site has to be brought down temporarily until this is fully resolved,” OTW announced.
The extended downtime did not sit well with avid readers, who took to social media to express their disappointment, frustration, and disbelief over losing access to their favorite online reading destination.

AO3 is a popular online archive for fan-created literary works inspired by real-life personalities, fictional characters, fandoms, and various forms of media.
The platform allows writers to explore different storylines, genres, and tropes, creating alternate universes and imaginative narratives that bring their favorite characters and pairings to life.
With thousands of stories serving different fandoms and reading preferences, AO3 has become a beloved online community for both readers and writers, making its unexpected disappearance all the more difficult for its devoted users.
