OPM hitmaker Ogie Alcasid is set to fulfill his longtime dream of staging his own musical with “Kailangan Kita: An Ogie Alcasid Musical,” which is scheduled to premiere in May 2027.
The upcoming production was officially unveiled after the closing show of “Bongga Ka, ’Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical” on Saturday, October 31, at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
The announcement was accompanied by a special teaser performance featuring a medley of Alcasid’s hit songs, including “Kailangan Kita,” “Hanggang Ngayon,” and “Dito sa Puso Ko.”
The songs were performed by Ethan David, Sheena Belarmino, Poppert Bernadas, Tep Logmao, Mark Gil, Rapah Manalo, Stephen Viñas, Yna Arbiol, Beng Turiano, Jannah Baniasia, and Iya Villanueva.
In an exclusive interview with the Philippine STAR, Ogie shared his mixed reaction to his upcoming musical.
“Scared, excited. I’m performing too,” he told STAR. “This is a dream of mine. I conceptualized the project. So I think for the dream to come into fruition and to become reality is very exciting.”
Alcasid is set to portray Roger Kundirana, a once-popular singer-songwriter who has given up on music and wants his only daughter, Himig, to do the same.
However, the passion he thought he had long lost begins to resurface when he meets Arlene, Himig’s music teacher, who becomes his new muse and reignites his desire to create and dream again.
Their story unfolds against the looming threat of “The Big One,” the massive earthquake that the city has long been warned could strike at any time.
The musical’s concept is led by Alcasid and his wife, Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, with playwright Eljay Castro Deldoc writing the book.
The production will be staged in partnership with PETA Plus and directed by Ian Segarra and Johnnie Moran.
“Kailangan Kita: An Ogie Alcasid Musical” is scheduled to run at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in May 2027. Further announcements regarding its cast, ticketing, and other production details are expected in the coming months.
The musical is a production of Newport World Resorts, in association with ATeam PH, VIVA Communications, and The Philippine STAR.
