Award-winning film “Sunshine” is set to make its way to the stage through an immersive “choose-your-own-adventure” theater adaptation.
Director Antoinette Jadaone announced the upcoming stage play as one of the future projects of Ilaya Ilaya, her new women-led production outfit, according to Deadline.
The stage adaptation will be directed by Mikko Angeles, known for “Bar Boys: The Musical,” and written by Mika Regis, who helmed “Unica Hijas”.
Lead stars Maris Racal, Elijah Canlas, and Xyriel Manabat are also set to reprise their respective roles in the stage production. For Racal and Manabat, the project will mark as their theater debuts.
“The project is envisioned as a choose-your-own-adventure experience that places audiences inside Sunshine’s world, expanding the film’s questions around agency, complicity, and choice beyond the screen,” Deadline reported.
Details about the play’s premiere date and additional cast members have yet to be announced.
“Sunshine” premiered at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival in 2024.
Racal earned her first-ever Best Actress recognition for her performance as the titular character, winning Best Lead Performance of 2025 at the 6th Pinoy Rebyu Awards presented by the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers on June 22.
She later received another Best Actress award for the film at the 9th Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards, also known as The Eddys, in July.
“Sunshine” follows a young gymnast who discovers that she is pregnant just days before the national team tryouts. The film explores the challenges faced by Filipino athletes aspiring to compete in prestigious international sporting events, including the Olympics.
The film also stars Jennica Garcia, Annika Co, and Meryll Soriano.
