Erwan Heussaff sparks discussion on dealbreakers in friendships with political differences

-

Content creator Erwan Heussaff shared his thoughts on whether friendships can survive political disagreements, weighing in on a viral online discussion about relationships amid political differences.

The conversation began on Threads, where content creator Zac Alviz posed a question to netizens amid ongoing political tension in the country: “Is it really worth throwing away years of friendship because you have different political opinions?”

Among the responses that gained attention was Heussaff’s, who drew a line between political disagreements and moral boundaries.

“Political opinions, no. But if it crosses into moral territory, yes,” Heussaff wrote in the comments. He cited an example: “If someone was the most charitable person you knew, but was also a known sexual abuser. If you can tolerate that and support that person, it says a lot about one’s moral character.”

He also warned against what he described as “red flags” in political discourse, particularly when individuals refuse to criticize their preferred leaders.

“Another red flag is if a person can only say positive things about their chosen politicians. We all know no one is perfect or even close to it, so if you can’t challenge your own beliefs, we can’t be friends,” he added. “We should constantly practice discernment. Not blindly defend the people we support, but regularly question whether our choices still align with our values.”

Heussaff and his wife, actress-host Anne Curtis, have both previously been vocal about political and social issues in the country. Curtis has also shared sentiments online about national developments, urging the public to “watch, learn, take note, and continue to pray” amid periods of unrest.

The discussion comes in the wake of recent political developments in the Philippines, including a sudden leadership shakeup in the Senate and renewed public attention surrounding Senator Bato Dela Rosa, who has been linked to reports of evasion of arrest amid an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant connected to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.
