Chappell Roan banned from Rio de Janeiro concert after bodyguard’s ‘very upsetting’ treatment of footballer Jorginho’s daughter

Queer popstar Chappell Roan was embroiled in another controversy after football star Jorginho accused the singer’s bodyguard of making his daughter cry during an “upsetting” encounter with the artist.

The controversy stemmed from a complaint by Jorginho, who claimed his 11-year-old daughter was left in tears after an incident at a hotel in São Paulo, where both his family and Chappell were staying during the Lollapalooza Brasil 2026.

Roan is best known for her hit songs, “Good Luck, Babe!”, “The Subway”, “Pink Pony Club”, and “HOT TO GO!”.

Jorginho posted a lengthy Instagram post in both English and Portuguese, detailing the incident.

“I went through a very upsetting situation with my family earlier today. This morning, my daughter woke up incredibly excited, she even made a sign because she was so happy to see an artist she really admires, or used to admire,” he wrote.

Chappell allegedly walked past the athlete’s wife, British singer Catherine Harding, and their daughter’s table, which excited the latter. Upon recognizing the singer, the young fan was prompted to check if it was really Roan.

“My daughter, like any child, recognised her, got excited, and just wanted to make sure it was really her. She didn’t even approach her. She simply walked past the singer’s table, looked to confirm it was her, smiled, and went back to sit with her mum. She didn’t say anything, didn’t ask for anything,” Jorginho narrated his daughter’s reaction to Chappell.

After his daughter walked by Roan’s table, Jorginho claimed a “large security guard” approached his family’s table while they were still eating and spoke to them in an “extremely aggressive manner”, telling his wife shouldn’t allow their daughter to “disrespect or harass other people”.

The bodyguard also allegedly threatened to file a complaint against them with the hotel, all while his young child was in tears.

“Honestly, I don’t know at what point simply walking past a table and looking to see if someone is there can be considered harassment. My daughter was extremely shaken and cried a lot,” Jorginho said. “It was just a child admiring someone.”

Jorginho, who said he understands public exposure due to his football career, reflected on the incident, saying, “I’ve lived with football, public exposure, and well-known people for many years, and I understand very well what respect and boundaries are. What happened there was not that.

“It’s sad to see this kind of treatment coming from those who should understand the importance of fans. At the end of the day, they are the ones who build all of this,” he stressed.

Ending his statement, Jorginho sent his advice to the singer, directly tagging her Instagram account on his post.

“I sincerely hope this serves as a moment of reflection. No one should have to go through this, especially not a child,” he wrote. “Without your fans, you would be nothing. And to the fans, she does not deserve your affection.”

The incident quickly gained traction online, prompting a response from Eduardo Cavaliere, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

In a post on X, Cavaliere announced that Roan would no longer be welcome to perform at the city’s annual “Todo Mundo no Rio” concert at Copacabana Beach, Brazil while he remains in office.

He also extended an invitation to Jorginho’s daughter to attend the event as a “guest of honor” and see Colombian songstress Shakira, instead.

“As long as I’m in charge of our city, this young lady, Chappell Roan, will never perform at Todo Mundo no Rio. I doubt that Shakira would do that! By the way, your little one is already the guest of honor from the organization in May!”, Cavaliere wrote.

As of writing, Roan and her team have yet to release an official statement addressing the allegations.
