Filipina Broadway icon Lea Salonga brought her vocal power to a Major Baseball League (MLB) game, where she performed the American national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The award-winning theater star made her appearance during the recent game between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, June 17.
A video of Salonga’s performance was shared on the Yankees’ official social media accounts with a caption that praised her vocal prowess and gave a nod to her current Broadway production, “Sondheim’s Old Friends.”
“Thank you to Tony-Award Winning Actress Lea Salonga for tonight’s beautiful rendition of our National Anthem 👏,” the sports team’s X post read.
Lea also posted a photo from the event on her own Instagram account, writing, “Thanks for having me! Go NYY!!!”
This marked the second appearance by a Filipina at an MLB game, following Pinay actress Liza Soberano, who took part in the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets game earlier this month.
Soberano, dressed in a Dodgers polo, threw the ceremonial first pitch during MLB’s Filipino Heritage Night, which also featured a performance by the Filipino girl group 4th Impact.
