OPM icon Hajji Alejandro passes away after bout with cancer

Filipino balladeer Hajji Alejandro who rose to fame with hits like “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,” has passed away after his battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

“At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss,” the bereaved family said in a statement, as posted by Hajji’s son, Delara drummer, Ali Alejandro.

Hajji, who earned the nickname, “Kilabot ng Kolehiyala,” in the ‘70s and ‘80s, is also known for other hits such as “Panakip Butas,” and “Tag-Araw,Tag-Ulan,” and his rendition of Apo Hiking Society’s “Nakapagtataka.”

He was also part of the legendary Circus Band and helped shape the golden era of OPM. 

Hajji is survived by his daughters with late wife Myrna Demaruro – singer and theater artist Rachel Alejandro, and chef Barni. He also has a son with TV personality Rio Diaz, Delara’s dummer Ali, and another daughter named Michelle.
