A son shared his experience of having a father who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. They may seem as though they have lost touch with reality.

Gen Z Ruslan Torrano Kulikov looked back on how their family found out his father’s mental illness.

Tapos ise-send po sa akin,” he said in an exclusive interview.

And well academically po talaga siya.

After his father’s diagnosis, Ruslan didn’t have enough time to spend with his father. But through his family’s stories, he was able to know him better.

His father, Philipp, was officially diagnosed with the mental illness in 2001. He then was confined in a rehabilitation center.

In 2013, he was released from the facility but after a year, he was brought back to the center after his symptoms were unmanageable.

Ruslan hopes that he can be an instrument to provide knowledge and awareness about the illness.

I believe that, sakit lang ‘yan,” he stressed.

Ruslan regularly visits his father in the facility as he brings different requested grocery items from him. He is hopeful that someday, he can spend some time with him outside the center.

We’re gonna travel the world and ipapakita ko sa’yo na there’s more life outside the rehabilitation center.
