Broadcast journalist Karen Davila has issued a clarification about her remarks about girl group BINI, which recently raised eyebrows of some P-pop fans.
A clip of Davila’s closing spiel from ABS-CBN’s flagship newscast TV Patrol recently made rounds online as she and her co-anchors talked about BINI’s achievements.
“Tsaka ang maganda do’n, kasi diba ang K-pop sikat sa buong mundo,” Davila said of the group and ABS-CBN’s management.
“Maganda yung BINI na sila yung magbubukas— ng pintuan para P-pop. ‘Pag sumikat sila, sisikat din yung iba pang Pilipino,” she added in the said clip posted by an X user.
This, however, did not sit well with Ppop fans, particularly those of SB19, who deemed Davila’s remark as a discredit to the Ppop supergroup.
Some, meanwhile, came to the defense of Davila, with one stressing that others might have taken the journalist’s words out of context as the report she commented on was about BINI being an opening act at the KCON LA 2024 in Los Angeles, California on July 27.
“They’re talking about the KCON where BINI is performing for [a] PRESHOW, so ibig sabihin niya sa “maganda yung bini na silang magbubukas..” is about KCON,” an X user said in a viral post.
After making talks online, Davila eventually turned to X to clarify her statement, leaving words of well wishes for both SB19 and BINI.
“SB19 first opened the doors for PPOP internationally and made history! BINI is carving their own – being the first all girl group to hit it big,” stressed Davila.
She added, “I should’ve been more specific. SB19 & BINI, you make us all proud! And may you both open more doors for aspiring local artists. Both are Proudly Filipino.”
