OFW tries six jobs before finding his calling as sushi chef in Italy

An OFW based in Italy shared his journey before he discovered his calling in sushi making.

It was in 2018 when 39-year-old Miller Ramos left the Philippines to work in Italy as a caregiver, hoping to give his family a better future.

“Dati akong naglalako ng isda. Pangingisda ang hanapbuhay namin. Sa hirap ng buhay that time. Nasubukan namin kumain ng asin lamang ang ulam tsaka mantika,” Ramos told The Philippine STAR. 

“No’ng nasa Italy na ako, nag-iba ‘yung mga trabaho ko dun. Hindi na ‘yung katulad ng trabaho ko sa Pilipinas. Nag-umpisa ako sa caregiver, ‘yung matanda na hindi na nakakalakad. Na-experience ko ‘yung mataehan sa kamay, sa pantalon. Nag babysitter din ako, naging katulong, linis bahay, tapos nag-dishwasher ako bago mag-umpisa sa kitchen,” he added.

Ramos tried working as a construction worker, welder, fast food crew, butcher, kitchen crew, and salesman before finding his luck as a sushi chef.

He worked as a salesman of a luxury brand in Europe for five years. Until a group of Filipinos mentioned a job in the sushi industry.

“May nag-aya sa ‘kin na mga kaibigan dahil hindi pa kilala ‘yung sushi dati, hindi pa gaanong naririnig sa Europe. Hindi lang ako pumunta nun at sumama dahil alam ko maganda na ‘yung trabaho ko, hindi ko siya pwedeng iwanan dahil bago lang din ako noon. After siguro ng five years nakita ko ‘yung improvement nila, ‘yung income nila,” he recalled.

In 2017, he tried entering the food industry.

“Napag isip-isip ko nun na ba’t hindi ko kaya palitan ‘yung sistema ko sa paghahanapbuhay. Sabi ko pasukin ko kaya ‘yung [pagshu] sushi. Galing din naman ako sa kusina. Marunong din ako. Sa Pilipinas nagdadaing kasi ako ng isda,” he said.

Despite having a lack of knowledge in the field, Ramos worked hard to study and learn everything about sushi.

Stressing, “Ako kasi ‘yung taong hindi ko titigilan ‘yung isang bagay. Hangga’t hindi ko nakukuha, hindi ako sumusuko. Hindi ko siya nasusubukan sa Pilipinas, sa Italy po lahat. Pinapakita ko talaga ‘yung best ko, kumbaga inaaral ko siyang mabuti. Kaya ito na siya ngayon, nagbunga ‘yung mga sakripisyong ginawa ko.”

To his surprise, he enjoyed his work and found his love in sushi making.

“Doon ko nakita ‘yung totoong passion ko sa trabaho. ‘Yung una hindi ko iniisip ‘yung sahod eh, iniisip kong matuto eh. May isa talaga akong kaibigan na tinuruan a kasi nakita niya siguro na willing talaga ako. Iba’t ibang lahi mga nakasama ko,” he shared.

Ramos currently works as a sushi chef and earns P80,000 monthly. Since he has some free time, he also accepts private events.

He is living with his wife and two children in the foreign country. According to him, he is eager to provide a better life for his family.

“May anak akong [may] autism. Pinapa-therapy namin. ‘Yung asawa ko, hindi ko siya pinagtatrabaho dahil naawa ako sa anak namin gusto ko maging mabuti siya. Hanggang ngayon hindi pa siya gaanong nakakapagsalita,” Ramos noted.

“Siya po talaga ‘yung inspiration ko Hindi lang ‘yung anak ko, family na rin syempre kinabukasan nila. Ginagawa ko lahat para lang madagdagan ‘yung [income] ko,” he added.

Ramos reminds his fellow OFWs, ”Mag-ipon po tayo, ‘wag gastos nang gastos. Maganda gumawa na ng negosyo sa Pilipinas habang po nagtratrabaho tayo dun.”
