‘AlDub pa rin?’: Netizens react to Alden Richards’ admission about past feelings for Maine Mendoza

-

For the first time ever, Alden Richards admitted that he had developed feelings for his former love team partner Maine Mendoza.

During a candid interview with Boy Abunda on his GMA program Fast Talk that aired on Monday, Oct. 9, the Kapuso actor opened up about having feelings for Maine during their time as AlDub, as what fans then called their “phenomenal” pairing in the Kalyeserye segment of Eat Bulaga.

Abunda posed the question to the actor while discussing the “split” of their love team, “Did you fall for Maine Mendoza?”

To which Alden answered after a brief pause, “Yes [na-fall ako], Tito Boy. Yes po.”

He continued, “Hypocrite po ako kung hindi [ko aaminin]. Yes po, ayoko pong sabihing alam niyo, but I did confess.”

The veteran host didn’t pursue the topic further out of respect for Maine’s husband.

Maine is now married to actor and politician Arjo Atayde.

The actor, who was on the show to promote his film Five Breakups and a Romance, was asked by Boy if he considered AlDub as the “biggest romance and breakup” in his career.

He confirmed it was. “AlDub [was also] a breakup, but let’s remove the negative context of breakup in this conversation… Because it doesn’t necessarily mean that when you’re going through a breakup, laging masama, laging masakit, laging malungkot,” Alden explained.

He added, “It was a breakup because both of us, Maine and I, we needed growth. We needed to venture into our individual lives, you know, to learn more and move forward.”

Although their Kalyeserye had long ended in 2016, some of their “die-hard fans” still believe that the AlDub pairing was not scripted, along with rumors of them having real-life children which both had already firmly denied.

While their active supporters rejoiced Alden’s admission, saying it was the closure they needed, some netizens have also reacted negatively towards the interview, saying it was being disrespectful towards Maine and Arjo who recently tied the knot.

Maine has not reacted to Alden’s statement.
