Lea Salonga temporarily halts Broadway activities due to COVID–19

-

Award-winning Broadway icon Lea Salonga confirmed on social media that she had tested positive for COVID-19.

Lea is among the first-ever all-Filipino cast of Here Lies Love, a disco Broadway musical that depicts former first lady Imelda Marcos’ rise to power and subsequent downfall at the hands of the historic People Power Revolution.

Apart from playing her role as Aurora Aquino, the mother of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino III, Lea also stands as one of its co-producers.

Fans have expressed their concern as the Filipina singer seemed to have been missing from the scheduled shows.

Lea addressed their questions in a Facebook post on Monday, August 7, “Hi everyone! So perhaps a few of you that have been coming to Here Lies Love this week noticed that I haven’t been in the theater since Wednesday.”

“Well, I tested positive for COVID, and thus made the decision to isolate and stay away from work. Thankfully my overall symptoms were mild, quite a different experience from my first bout with the virus,” explained Lea.

“Although I did wish to return by weekend, COVID had other ideas, so out of abundance of caution for audiences, co-workers and myself, I opted to take all the time to rest and heal,” she added.

Lea said that she might return on the stage of Here Lies Love on Tuesday, August 8. However, she noted that she won’t be entertaining any autograph signing for a while as a precautionary measure.

“As wonderful as it is to connect to you all after the performance, I need to take care of myself. Thank you so much for supporting our show! Can’t wait to get back on the dance floor!”, she said.

Here Lies Love has extended its run in Broadway theatres until August 19, 2023.
