It’s a full-circle 2016 moment for K-drama fans as two of the decade’s most iconic stars, Gong Yoo and Song Hye Kyo, are set to headline an upcoming Netflix series together.
The actors, who led the massively popular 2016 dramas “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” and “Descendants of the Sun,” respectively, will star in the Netflix romantic series “Tantara.”
The project was officially introduced on Wednesday, Jan. 21, during Netflix’s content showcase, “Next on Netflix 2026 Korea”, where it was unveiled as part of the streaming platform’s highly anticipated lineup.
Set against the Korean entertainment industry of the 1960s and 1980s, “Tantara” follows the rise of individuals who start with almost nothing but risk everything for a shot at dazzling success.
Song Hye Kyo portrays the role of Min Ja, while Gong Yoo stars as Dong Gu, Min Ja’s childhood friend.
The cast also includes singer-actress Seolhyun as Min Hui, who shares a complicated love-hate relationship with Min Ja; Cha Seung Won as Gil Yeo, the era’s greatest composer; and Lee Ha Nee as Yang Ja, Min Hui’s mother and an aspiring singer.
The series is written by acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee Kyung, known for “Our Blues” and “Dear My Friends,” and directed by Lee Yoon Jung, whose credits include “Coffee Prince” and “Cheese in the Trap.”
Tantara is reportedly slated to premiere in the fourth quarter of the year.
