Neil Arce, film producer and husband of Angel Locsin, came to the defense of actress and political scion Gela Alonte amid renewed backlash against her online.
The controversy stemmed from heightened scrutiny of children of political families after President Bongbong Marcos Jr. ordered a probe into politicians allegedly tied to questionable government flood control projects.
The move triggered what many described as “online shaming” of so-called “nepo babies” with netizens targeting the perceived “lavish and aesthetic lifestyles” flaunted by some politicians’ children on social media.
Gela, daughter of Biñan City Mayor Gel Alonte, drew attention again in the wake of the controversies. She previously faced criticism for holding a “grand” birthday celebration despite flooding in Biñan, as well as for her resurfaced comment about being part political dynasties.
Neil, on the other hand, voiced his support for Gela, highlighting her character and work ethic in a post on Instagram.
“History would prove that I would be 100% supportive of bashing the corrupt. But not Gela Alonte,” he wrote.
“I have seen her work hard for what she has, and I have never seen a glimpse of brattiness or privilege when I work with her,” Arce said, sharing his personal experience with the young actress.
He further appealed to the public to be more discerning, while continuing to shed light on the pressing issue: “Let’s continue calling people out, but let’s also make sure we call out the right ones.”
