Veteran ‘kontrabida’ actor John Regala dies at 55

Veteran actor John Regala has passed away. He was 55 years old.

Aster Amoyo, veteran entertainment columnist and talent manager, relayed the sad news in a social media post, stating that the actor died on Saturday morning due to “multiple ailments”.

“Let us all pray for the eternal repose of his soul,” she wrote.

John’s wife, Victoria Scherrer, meanwhile, detailed in an ABS-CBN interview that the actor died of cardiac arrest due to liver and kidney complications at the New Era General Hospital at 6:28 a.m.

Fans and friends have since taken to social media to mourn the actor’s death.

The late actor, who’s best known for his kontrabida roles on Philippine television, was confined at the hospital in 2020 while battling liver cirrhosis.

Photos of John went viral that year after he was spotted seeking help from a delivery food rider, drawing concern from netizens.

In a past interview with Raffy Tulfo on Idol in Action, John revealed he was living alone and left to fend for himself in Quezon City.

Broadcaster-turned-politician Raffy Tulfo then pledged to help the actor with his medical expenses and gave other forms of assistance.

Showbiz colleagues such as Amoyo, Nadia Montenegro, and Chuckie Dreyfus also came to the aid of the ailing actor.
