In an episode of the Kapamilya morning show Magandang Buhay on Wednesday, June 14, comedienne host Melai Cantiveros declared who’s the “real pop icon”.
In celebration of Independence Day, momshies Melai Cantiveros, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, and Jolina Magdangal participated in a segment where they each held a placard that read “Malaya Ako”.
“Kayo ba, sa anong bagay niyo masasabang malaya kayo, mga momshies?” Melai prompted the question. The hosts then shared their sentiments and experiences with being free.
Melai took the lead to break the ice with a funny story of her brushing her teeth, “not once but ten times a day”.
The hosts shared laughs before Jolina told her own, saying, “Malaya akong magsuot ng sequins na palda kasi self expression!”
Regine supported Jolina’s take on fashion as the latter did a twirl to show off her skirt, “Yes! Kasi ganyan mo ine-express ang iyong self-creativity.”
Meanwhile, Melai took the wheel again to add another “Malaya ako” statement.
“Wag kang makulit!,” Jolina tried to keep Melai from voicing her opinion.
“Malaya rin kaming sabihin dito na ikaw talaga ang pop culture icon!” Melai quipped which Jolina reacted to shyly, covering her face with her own placard.
Regina cheered for her fellow artist while Melai jokingly slammed down her placard on the ground to make her point stronger.
Their banter was cut short as they passed the spotlight to Regine who shared that her freedom came from not having anyone prevent her from doing things.
The hosts then introduced their next segment featuring Andrea Brillantes who recently greeted herself a “Happy Independence Day”, days after her split with basketball player Ricci Rivero.
Jolina then posted a screenshot of an appreciation post from Twitter user @darnaarchives on the same day, noting “the only Filipino female recording artists with two or more albums that sold 200,000 copies” which included the ‘Queen of Soul’ Jaya, and two of the momshies Asia’s Songbird Regine and ‘Pinoy Pop Icon’ Jolina herself.
“Awwwwwwwwww!!!!! Kiliiiiiiig!!! Mga ate ko yan!!!!! Love you Ate @reginevalcasid and Ate @jaya,” Jolina wrote in the caption.
The debate over the worthy titleholder of ‘pop icon’ began on social media after Kapuso singer Julie Anne San Jose was announced as one of the coaches at GMA Network’s The Voice Generations where she was referred to as the “Pop Icon Coach”.
Most fans of Jolina and Julie clashed against each other as they weighed in on their idols’ discography and achievements that would make them worthy as the ‘Pinoy Pop Icon’.
On June 13, GMA had then changed Julie’s AGT title from “Pop Icon Coach” to “Limitless Star Coach”.
