‘Girl power’: NewJeans makes history as first female K-pop act to win MAMA since 2011

K-pop girl group NewJeans achieved a remarkable feat in the recently held Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), after they bagged the Artist of the Year award, making them the first female K-pop act to win the said award since 2011.

The second day of the awarding ceremony took off yesterday, November 29, in Tokyo Dome, Japan.

In the history of MAMA, the last time a K-pop girl group won the Artist of the Year award was when SNSD, also known as Girls Generation, won such award back in 2011.

Since then, male K-pop acts seemed to be dominating the said awarding ceremony as Big Bang, G-Dragon, EXO, and BTS were awarded as Artist of the Year in the following years until 2022.

Meanwhile, NewJeans did not only receive the Artist of the Year award. Even without their appearance in the awarding ceremony, they also won the Song of the Year, another grand prize, for their hit song “Ditto.”

In addition, they were also awarded as the Best Female Group, and Best Dance Performance for Female Group category.

Aside from NewJeans, the K-pop boy band Seventeen also bagged home the Album of the Year award, another grand prize, for their album “FML.” The boy group also won Best Male Group, Best Dance Performance for Male Group category, Cultural and Style Award, and Worldwide Fan Choice.
