Fans of the Magandang Buhay host Jolina Magdangal and Asia’s Limitless Star Julie Anne San Jose clashed on Twitter over the title of “pop icon” after GMA’s The Voice Generations (TVG) used it to introduce the latter as one of its coaches.
Before TVG’s reveal, the show hinted at titles for each coach which included “The Pop Icon Coach”. Netizens and Julie’s fans alike speculated on the Kapuso singer being one of the coaches, while others guessed other pop artists like Sarah Geronimo and the ‘owner’ of the title herself, now-momshie Jolina.
On Friday, June 9, Julie was announced as one of the coaches of the singing talent show along with celebrity host Billy Crawford, Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda, and P-pop boy group SB19 member Stell.
Netizens and mostly Jolina’s fans, questioned the worthiness of the singer for using the title “Pop Icon” to introduce Julie as one of the coaches. According to them, Julie has yet to release a song that has topped the charts or can be deemed as memorable and iconic.
Meanwhile, fans noted the ‘real pop icon’ has not only released hit songs but also popularized classic Pinoy expressions like “Chuva Chu Chu” as well as unique looks and fashion styles. Jolens fans also mentioned her TV dramas and films that became classics for its popularity.

“How to be a LEGIT POP ICON like Jolina Magdangal? Be Jolegendary…” another netizen tweeted with a photo of Jolina’s achievements.
“Si Donna Cruz, Jolina Magdangal and Sarah Geronimo lang ang kilala kong pop icon. Wala pa kong nakikitang kasunod,” a netizen replied under a photo of Julie’s reveal as a TVG coach.
“What MORE does Julie Anne freakin’ San Jose have to prove for her to deserve that “Pop Icon” tag? She has been widely successful career wise. She does EVERYTHING She’s sold over million of records, packed concerts, songs widely streamed. Not enough?,” one netizen pointed out.
“Deserve ni Julie Anne San Jose. Bakit? Singer na, dancer pa, actress pa, multi-instrumentalist, singing multilingual songs at song writer pa.Masyado niyo atang minamaliit ang kakayahan ng babaeng ‘to,” a netizen defended Julie.
“I don’t understand the amount of hate julie anne san jose is receiving where in fact she is a humble even though when know it that she’s really deserving to be called a pop icon and a limitless star. she is a musical genius since then, when it is given to her, she’ll give it all,” a netizen added.
