Angel Aquino shared that her decision to come out on public television was unplanned, saying that her sexuality was never something she kept secret in the first place.
The veteran actress recently addressed the topic following her on-air admission in October 2025 on Bilyonaryo TV, where she shared that she is attracted to women and can fall in love with them.
In an interview with The Philippine STAR’s Nathalie Tomada during an event for beauty brand Rejuran Infinite, Aquino clarified that her coming out was not a planned announcement.
“Actually, nabigla din ako. Kasi hindi ko naman siya pinlano. It wasn’t something… ‘I’m coming out today.’ No! And I feel kasi it’s something that people have known for a very long time and we just don’t openly talk about it,” she said.
Angel emphasized that her relationships were never concealed from the public eye.
“You know, they have seen me with people I’ve been with and hindi ko naman siya tinago ever,” she added.
Aquino also expressed gratitude to members of the media for respecting her privacy over the years, noting that she was never pressured to define her sexuality or turn it into an issue.
“But thankfully, the press people have been kind not to pick on that, ‘di ba?” she said. “I’m so thankful, all those years…I mean, I was just being myself. I love people I fell in love with, hindi ako namili.”
She further appreciated the public’s supportive response when she eventually spoke about it. At the time of coming out on Bilyonaryo TV, Aquino drew praise online, with many members of the sapphic community celebrating her openness.
“And then they waited for me to, I guess, say something about it, and when I did, thank you din for the kind response. I’m really grateful about that. I really appreciate the kindness that was offered,” Angel shared.
When asked if she is now open to taking on more girls’ love (GL) or queer-themed projects, the actress underscored that the quality and sensitivity of the material remain her top considerations.
“The material is still important. Your co-actors, your director are important. Because it’s a very touchy subject. It has to be handled with care,” she said.
Aquino has previously appeared in projects exploring similar themes, including the 2013 coming-of-age film “Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita”, where she played the object of a young girl’s affection, and the short film “Silig”, where she starred alongside fellow veteran actress Sylvia Sanchez.
