‘Hindi mo malaman kung iiyak ka o sisigaw’: Sheryn Regis on battle with cancer

Sheryn Regis was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016. The singer-songwriter almost lost her ability to sing, her bread and butter.

In an interview on talk show Tonight With Boy Abunda, the singer-songwriter recalled her journey of surviving cancer.

Upon discovering that she was ill, Sheryn shared she did not know how to react. “Hindi mo malaman kung iiyak ka o hindi or sisigaw ka na lang. Ganun yung feeling. Kasi nung time kasi, kumanta lang ako at pagod na pagod na pagod ako, gusto ko na lang mahimatay,” she said.

She admitted the thought of ending her singing career has crossed her mind after she discussed the effects of the surgery with a patient who had undergone the same procedure.

“Tinanong ko siya, after six months, wala pa rin boses and then the rest it was cancer so kailangan talaga tanggalin agad agad,” she shared.

Despite knowing that she might lose her talent, she proceeded with the surgery. Thankfully, her doctor from Cebu was aware of her career.

In the operating room, they played Sheryn’s hit song Come In Out Of The Rain as a reminder for her doctor to be meticulous in avoiding anything that would compromise her voice.

“A good doctor in Cebu played Come In Out Of The Rain while doing the surgery. Para daw makonsensya sila na wag matamaan yung laryngeal nerve,” she said.

A month after her surgery, Sheryn sang for a religious event. “Because of my faith, kakanta ako at gagaling ako,” she said.

Today, the singer is making showbiz comeback cancer-free.
