Is Netflix Philippines’ ‘Outside’ getting a sequel?

With the way it ended, “Outside” director Carlo Ledesma talked about the possibility of a sequel to Netflix Philippines’ zombie-themed psychological thriller.

Spoiler alert: The movie is open-ended with the suggestion of a rescue for the mother and youngest son characters played by Beauty Gonzalez and Aiden Patdu. “Outside” also stars Sid Lucero and Marco Masa as the father and firstborn son, respectively.

In a Philippine STAR article, the writer and director was asked if the ending was setting the stage for a Part 2.

“It all depends, I guess, on how this one does worldwide. So sana magustuhan, and hopefully, we’ll see what Netflix decides,” Ledesma said.

He also hinted that he could explain the origins of the zombies or the zombie outbreak in “future films.”

Ledesma also said that while he thinks that fans of zombie-centered series and movies would be interested to check out the “Outside,” he stressed there’s more to it than being “Netflix Philippines’ first zombie film.”

“Probably, they’ll watch it kasi mahilig sila sa zombie films. But when they watch it, I hope they realize that this is really a movie about the monsters in all of us, and that it’s okay that we’re not perfect people. I want audiences to realize that it’s okay to have conflict within themselves, but what’s important is that they have the desire to become better people,” he said in the interview.

Meantime, Ledesma was just grateful for being able to bring to life the story about a family who sought shelter in an ancestral home in the province amid a zombie outbreak, only to discover that a more pressing danger was inside the house.

“I’m just grateful that Black Cap Pictures trusted me to bring this story to life and that (the actors) trusted me to guide them. Okay na ako, solved na ako with however the audience here in the Philippines and globally, would want to perceive it.”

“Outside,” which is available in 32 different languages, is currently No. 1 film on Netflix Philippines.
