Did TV5’s Kaladkaren and Mikee Reyes just throw shade at GMA’s AI sportscasters?

TV5’s Kaladkaren and Mikee Reyes seemed to have thrown shade at GMA network’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated sportscasters.

During a broadcast of Frontline Pilipinas on Monday, Kaladkaren remarked, “Hindi po ‘to A.I., ako po si Kaladkaren,” while delivering her closing spiel.

Another clip showed sportscaster and co-anchor Mikee Reyes poking fun at Kaladkaren.

“Kurutin niyo nga si [Kaladkaren] baka A.I. ka,” said Mikee.

“Totoong tao po ako ah, mga kapatid,” Kaladkaren responded as she did robotic moves.

Last Sunday, GMA introduced Maia and Marco during the opening ceremony of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 as part of their “bold step towards the future of sports broadcasting”.

The Kapuso network’s digital initiative, however, drew concerns from most netizens.

Reacting to the criticism, GMA network maintained that the virtual sportscasters are merely presenters and are meant to complement and not replace the human aspect of their coverage.

“Maia and Marco are AI presenters, they are not journalists, they can never replace our seasoned broadcasters and colleagues who are the lifeblood of our organization,” GMA Network Senior Vice and Head of Integrated News, Regional TV, and Synergy Oliver Victor Amoroso was quoted as saying in a GMA report.

He added, “We are now living in the age of AI and other major news organizations worldwide are already using this as a tool to improve their operations.”
