Blackpink’s Jennie to make Hollywood acting debut in HBO’s The Idol

Blackpink’s main rapper, Jennie Kim is set to make her Hollywood acting debut in Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s upcoming HBO series, The Idol.

While eagle-eyed fans were quick to catch sight of the K-pop idol’s appearance in the series’ first official teaser trailer, HBO has given further confirmation of her casting in a tweet posted on Monday, July 18. 

The American television network made the announcement as they shared a photo of Jennie on set, along with the caption: “Jennie Kim has been cast in #THEIDOL.”

Blackpink’s label, YG Entertainment has also reportedly confirmed the K-pop star’s appearance in the upcoming series in a statement made on Tuesday, July 19, according to Korean entertainment news outlet allkpop

Based on the same report, the talent management agency also relayed, on behalf of Jennie, her thoughts on being cast in The Idol.

The K-pop star was quoted saying: “As soon as I read the scenario, I thought that the story was very charming and so I wanted to be a part of it. I’m excited and I’ll do my best, so I hope that everyone will tune in warmly.” 

Jennie’s appearance in the new series come amid speculations of her involvement in The Idol, where she was reportedly offered a role, a month ago, according to Korean entertainment media outlet Soompi

No further details, however, were provided about the K-pop star’s role in the highly-anticipated drama. 

As of writing, HBO is also yet to announce a premiere date for The Idol, which will center on “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood” and will tell the story of a pop singer (played by Lily Rose-Depp) who gets involved with an enigmatic leader of a modern-day cult (played by The Weeknd).

Meanwhile, alongside Blackpink members Lisa, Rosé, and Jisoo, Jennie will be making a long-awaited comeback in the K-Pop music scene as the girl group plans to release a new album this August.
