All hands on deck: Celebrities who stepped up to the plate amid the COVID-19 pandemic

Amid personal challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic, these celebrities made sure to step up to the plate and use their platforms for good.

Even when 2020 proved itself to be one of the toughest years for everyone, these inspiring women responded to the needs of their fellow Filipinos in a big and impactful way.

Gretchen Ho

The athlete-host started #DonateABikeSaveAJob, an initiative that gives out bicycles for working Filipinos so that they can support their livelihoods.

Back in August, Gretchen only promised to give away 50 bikes once the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) was lifted in Manila. This December, she was happy to announce that they have already given out 1,000 bicycles.

Several celebrities such as Piolo Pascual, Catriona Gray, Sam Milby, Angel Locsin and Karen Davila have donated bicycles to her project as well.

Bea Alonzo

During the onset of the pandemic, Bea Alonzo and her friends set up the I Am Hope organization to extend their help to COVID-19 frontliners and different communities affected by the lockdown.

Just in May, they were able to raise over P9M for the benefit of healthcare workers and communities in need.

In an Instagram video, she said 44 hospitals and 36 communities have already benefited from the money they have raised.

Angel Locsin

The actress has been at the forefront of different charity initiatives to aid those in need whilst the pandemic is going on.

Her #UniTentWeStand project donated numerous isolation and sanitation tents to different hospitals in Luzon. Angel said they aimed to help solve overcrowding in hospitals.

She did not stop there — Angel even revived her Shop and Share fundraising initiative that called on big-name personalities to auction off their prized belongings to provide COVID-19 test kits and testing opportunities for poorer sectors in the country.

Just recently, Angel shared that her and her fiancé Neil Arce’s new passion project of planting more trees to “transform the world.”
