First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos has spoken up on the viral video of her drinking from Senate President Chiz Escudero’s wine glass at an event in Malacañang Palace.
The wife of President Bongbong Marcos recently made talks online after she was spotted grabbing Escudero’s wine glass and drinking from it during the recently held Vin d’Honneur (wine of honor) in celebration of the country’s Independence Day.
The online community shared their mixed reactions, with some criticizing Liza’s behaviors, suggesting that the First Lady might have mistaken Escudero as a waiter.
In a statement sent to DZRH, the first lady addressed the incident, sharing the “truth” behind the viral video.
According to her, after greeting 82 ambassadors and international organization representatives, she and the president went to the ceremonial hall where they were ushered to Escudero and Speaker Martin Romualdez’s position.
Liza continued to share how her 10-second pleasantries with Escudero went.
“When Chiz saw me, he said ‘Wow– bilib din ako sa iyo. May energy ka pa after standing and smiling for over an hour. I’m sure you could use a drink,’” Liza quoted Escudero as saying.
“I laughed and said, ‘You bet.’ And so I mischievously got his glass of champagne, took a sip and told him, “Eww hindi naman malamig ang champagne. After that, I gave his champagne glass back to him and we both had a good laugh over that,” she added.
The first lady also mentioned that she has been friends with the senator for a long time since their law school days.
“He studied in UP and I went to Ateneo. We’ve been friends for like forever. So whether ‘I made him a waiter’ and/or ‘he responded like a gentleman’ is between us,” stressed Liza.
Escudero, on the other hand, had earlier gave his point of view on the viral video, saying that he was waiting on the first lady as a “gentlemanly gesture.”
“Maaaring sabihin ng iba na maka-luma o parang ‘under’ pero para sakin, hindi kailanman magiging maka-luma o di uso, ano man ang itawag ng iba, ang pagiging maginoo at pakikipag-kapwa tao,” stated the senator.
