Curfew violators in Davao del Norte made to pray and watch over caskets as ‘punishment’

A town in Davao del Norte has thought of a way to deal with stubborn residents who violate the implemented curfew amid the COVID-19 community quarantine.

A Facebook post by the Municipal Government of Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte showed curfew violators, who were also caught under the influence of alcohol, being made to pray and watch over caskets placed inside a gym as penalty.

In a separate post, the municipality also said that “criminal charges will also be filed against those individuals who will be caught violating the curfew hours effective Sunday, March 29.”

A viral post by a resident in Brgy. Sto. Niño in San Simon, Pampanga earlier caught the attention of netizens with the tanods’ “strategy” in urging residents to stay at home and follow curfew hours.

Another viral video showed a young violator literally placed inside the coffin, while his friend waited outside, for still going out despite the strict implementation of the “stay at home” policy.

Local government units have started imposing quarantine protocols after President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Luzon under the enhanced community quarantine to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Several LGUs in Mindanao and Visayas have also implemented measures to keep their residents inside their homes.

In a Philstar.com report, NCRPO chief Guillermo Eleazar said that  42,826 curfew offenders were apprehended in Luzon alone while 9,583 are either in Visayas or Mindanao for violating curfew hours during the first 11 days of quarantine.
