Motorcycle rider gets ticketed for drinking vodka as ‘protection’ from COVID-19

A motorcycle driver who registered a temperature of 38 degrees celsius at a police checkpoint got ticketed for driving under the influence of alcohol after drinking vodka as a “protection” from the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a video posted by ABS-News on Monday, the rider was questioned about his body condition after showing signs of fever due to his high body temperature while getting thermal-scanned at the Marikina-Cainta border.

“Sir kamusta pakiramdam?” the on-duty health worker asked the rider.

“Okay naman Ma’am,” answered the rider.

The rider later revealed he drank three shots of vodka before driving.

“Aminin ko na Ma’am naka-shot lang ako Ma’am eh… Yung vodka, naka-tatlong shot lang ako.”

The nearby police officer then told him that he committed a violation.

“Naka-tatlong shot ka tapos nag-drive ka ng motor. Bawal ‘yun,” he said.

He added: “Kasi dapat sa motor ang alcohol content mo dapat nasa .01 lang or negative. Bawal yang ginagawa mo.”

“Oo nga po eh. Pasensya na po Sir,” the rider immediately admitted to his mistake.

Republic Act No. 10586 or the “Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013” is an act “that penalizes persons under the influence of alcohol, dangerous drugs, and similar substances, and for other purposes.”

Asked by ABS-CBN reporter Chiara Zambrano why he drank alcohol, the rider explained: “Ano lang sa virus kasi alcohol yan eh, proteksyon lang.”

Checkpoints have been set up in several regions amid the Luzon-wide “enhanced community quarantine” to counter the spread of COVID-19.
