Jose Mari Chan trends online as netizens gear up for the ‘Ber’ months

Singer-songwriter Jose Mari Chan is the talk of the internet as netizens gear up for the beginning of the “Ber” months, also known as the start of the country’s Christmas season.

Joe Mari, as he is fondly known, turned into a Christmas icon for his Christmas in Our Hearts album and title single, which was released in 1990, or exactly 30 years ago.

Now that we’re only a day away from the so-called “Ber” months, netizens resurrect their best memes of the country’s very own “Father of Christmas.”

A video of the 75-year-old singing his new normal version of his hit song Can We Just Stop and Talk Awhile also warmed the hearts of netizens. He updated the lyrics to include the words quarantine, chat, Facetime and Internet.

A Twitter user wrote how the singer has always brought warmth and positivity to many.

“Jose Mari Chan” landed the 16th spot in Twitter Philippines’ top trending list.

In an interview with TV Patrol, he shared his wish that the messages of his memes be positive especially during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, in a Philippine Star interview on Monday, the veteran crooner said that he considers it a “wonderful blessing” that Christmas in Our Hearts is still loved and sung even by the younger generation.

“It has been 30 years since the song was launched. As I’ve been saying, the message of Christmas is Love. At this time of the unprecedented pandemic, amidst all the fears, anxiety and uncertainty, let us find ways to express our Love for our countrymen, many of whom are out of work and in dire need,” he said.
