Stray dog helps rescue newborn baby abandoned in Cebu dumpsite

This stray dog helped save the life of a newborn baby boy who was found abandoned at a garbage dumpsite in Sibonga town in southern Cebu on Christmas Eve.

On Saturday, Cebu-based newspaper The Freeman reported that a certain Junrell Fuentes Revilla was riding his motorcycle along Brgy. Magkagong around 11 a.m. on December 24 when a dog seemingly tried to get his attention by barking and chasing after him.

Revilla then got off his motorcycle and went after the dog that led him to the spot where the newborn was found “wrapped with a brown towel with the placenta being placed on a black plastic (bag).”

Police were later called to the hospital where Revilla brought the baby.

Police Master Sergeant Venus Tampos of the Sibonga Police Women and Children Protection Desk said that “the baby may have just been born as part of its umbilical cord was still hanging from its navel when Revilla found him.”

The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office is currently looking after the infant while authorities are locating and appealing to the baby boy’s mother to take responsibility over her son.

Meanwhile, the Sibonga police shared pictures of the dog that helped rescue the baby. The dog is among five stray dogs that are frequently seen at the dumpsite, they said.
