Robin Padilla has something nice to say about how Joyce Bernal directed President Duterte’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
The veteran actor on Tuesday took to Instagram to congratulate his “friend” for lending expertise to improve the SONA.
“Isang malalim na pagbati at pasasalamat sa aking kaibigan at hinahangaan na direktora Binibining Joyce Bernal sa pagkakalapat ng kanyang talino at sining para sa ikakaganda ng State of the Nation Address ng ating Pangulo ng Pilipinas, ‘mayor’ Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” he said.
Two things particularly impressed Robin. “Perfect camera works sa Batasang Pambansa at napakaganda ng short film na kuha sa Cordillera bilang prelude sa arrival ni PRRD,” he said.
The filming of the “special introductory video” in Cordillera earlier met problems after direk Joyce and her production crew were barred from entering the towns of Sagada and Banaue.
Meanwhile, Alessandra de Rossi shared the same short film on her Twitter account because “wala yata nakapanood.”
Alessandra tweeted: “Yan ang opening kahapon. Wala yata nakapanood. Ako nalang. Sayang eh. Pilipinas, wag nating sayangin ang ganda mo. Maging mabuting tao tayo at alagaan ang kalikasan, dahil sya rin ang nagaalaga sa atin.”
But not all in the industry were happy that filmmakers like Joyce were directing the annual address by the President to a joint session of the Congress.
In a tweet, director and producer Quark Henares questioned the government getting filmmakers for the SONA.
“WHY. WHY DO THEY EVEN GET FILMMAKERS TO SHOOT THE F*CKING SONA,” he said in a tweet.
Fellow filmmaker Dan Villegas also reacted to Quark’s post, saying: “Honestly, mas gets ko if you did it tapos you REALLY need the money.”
This was already the third time that direk Joyce, who’s best-known for her blockbuster rom-coms and comedy films, megged the SONA, taking over Cannes-winning filmmaker Brillante Mendoza in 2018.
In the lead-up to this year’s national event, Joyce had said in a interview that this year’s SONA would have a “Pinoy na Pinoy” flavor.
“Para sa mga tao naman ito so ibang flavor naman. Pinoy na Pinoy. Mas maiintindihan, mas magaan,” she was quoted as saying in a GMA report.
She also noted that while the event was simplified amid the ongoing health crisis, it had also become technically complicated with the less number of people to help her mount the program. That was why most parts, save for Pres. Duterte’s speech, were “pre-recorded,” she added.
