‘Lost Sabungeros’ pulled out from Cinemalaya due to ‘security concerns’

The screening of the GMA Public Affairs documentary, “Lost Sabungeros”, which aims to investigate the disappearances of over 30 sabungeros last year, has been canceled due to safety concerns.

The decision, which was disclosed in a joint statement by Cinemalaya and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) released on Monday, August 4, cited “security concerns” as the primary reason behind the cancellation.

“Our paramount concern is the safety and well-being of our audience, staff, and all involved. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time,” the statement read.

Cinemalaya and CCP have assured the public that they are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all their events. They have also expressed their gratitude for the continued support and understanding from the community.

The screening, originally scheduled for August 8 at 5 PM and August 9 at 5:30 PM at Ayala Malls Manila Bay cinemas, will now be replaced by the Cinemalaya full-length entry, The Wedding Dance.

Directed by Bryan Kristoffer Brazil, Lost Sabungeros was set to delve into the mysterious disappearances of over 30 sabungeros (cockfighters) that captured national attention last year, and promised a deep investigation into the circumstances surrounding the missing individuals.

The documentary was described as one of GMA’s “most dangerous and courageous investigative documentaries”.

The Cinemalaya 2024 festival will continue to run from August 2 to 11 and will feature 10 short films and 11 full-length movies.
